My WC (waist circumference) was more than 80 cm and that is one criterion for syndrome X or metabolic syndrome. A person has metabolic syndrome if he or she has three or more of these 5 criteria as stated below:
Abdominal obesity. This is determined by measuring the waist circumference, the criteria of which are population- and country-specific. For Malaysians, the upper limits for both men and women are 90 cm and 80 cm respectively.
High blood pressure. If the reading is at or above 130 mmHg for systolic and/or 85 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure, or if a person is on medication for hypertension, then he or she falls into this group.• High blood glucose. A fasting level above 5.6 mmol/L is abnormal. You have diabetes if your fasting level is more than 7.0 mmol/L on at least two separate occasions. If the value falls somewhere in between, you will then have impaired glucose tolerance or IGT. A special test called Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) may be needed to confirm the status.
High triglycerides. This other main component of fat in the body is used as fuel for energy consumption. Elevated levels are found in those who are overweight, smokers, those who consume excess alcohol and eat high carbohydrate diet and those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Levels above 1.7 mmol/L are considered high.•Low HDL-cholesterol. Not all cholesterol is bad. HDL or good cholesterol facilitates the reverse transport of cholesterol from the arteries to the liver. This is in opposite action to LDL or bad cholesterol which causes the arteries to clog up. A level below 1.0 mmol/L for men and 1.3 mmol/L for women is considered abnormal.
Except from here!
Indeed, I have three criteria: WC, BP and LDL.
So, people are talking about new year's resolution. My resolution is so very practicle, just wanting a regular daily routine with these objectives:
1. Maximum limit to one cup of rice a day with very simple lauk, e.g. ikan goreng with kuah pindan
2. At least 40 minutes with Rael Iskowitz in the evening, minimum 5 days a week. Optional, jogging during weekend.
3. Overdose on celery, carrot, daikon, lemon, green tea and the leaves from plants in my garden.
4. Weekly vacuuming and moping the whole house, at least once a week.
5. More quality time with hubby's cats.
The above routine will hopefully trim my WC and tone up the bod..and I'll be enjoying wonderful benefits, like normal blood pressure, normal lipids and lower risk of breast cancer relapse.

I'll do my blood test after coming back from Penang to prepare for the next appointment with Dr.Z on the 11th January 2012 ...
Yae, jumpa di Penang. Kalu you tengok I pakai kebaya pink, makna nya the first 4 days of 2012 telah dicapai dengan jayanya...back up baju kurung pahang pink juga..nak padan dengan tema buku saya.
Asiah, rasanya you dah ada 2 criteria, kalau BP high, masuk geng saya dah tu.
thanks for the head on, kak has! this is a good reminder to start a new year...
OO, semoga tahun 2012 membawa banyak rezeki dan kebahgian kepada OO sekeluarga
Doc, a much needed reminder for everyone especially at the start of the year. Time for us all to buckle-up!
Tak sabar nak tunggu hari Khamis ni ... Esuk nak kemas, hari Rabu Hisham sampai jer kami terus gerak ke Penang. You stay kat mana Has? Kami dari DBP duk kat Vistana Hotel. Hisham kata nak makan nasi kandar ... jalan kaki jer dari hotel tu. Abang Shuib sekali tak? Nak jumpa both of you! Blood test, tunggu balik dari Penang. Esuk nak gi dentist cos gigi gusi geraham belah atas berdarah setiap malam. Sebelum ni tak berani nak treat dan dentist pun suruh selesaikan kemo dulu ...
Oh ye...nanti you mesti ayu dengan warna pink tu naik pentas
Asiah: Satu geng USM duduk di Vistana, Kayu dekat sangat dengan hotel, best nya, Shuib ada geng nanti. I am all out to reduced WC coz I said to myself, syndrome X no more....so Kayu-mayu, I tengok saja, sambil hirup Singha beng kosong.
Ummu, Yes, we don't need to have any syndrome...apatah lagi syndrome X!
Salam Prof,
A great reminder for the start of the new year. I m guilty on so many fronts and have to really push myself to stay focussed on the weight n cholesterol issues.
Congrats on the launch of yr book. May the new year bring us good health and blessings from the Almighty. Have a great time in good old Penang. I spent my entire childhood in Penang so I hv wonderful memories . Apart from the fabulous nasi kandar, don't forget the great seafood or the mee udang sg dua. Yum yum. Have fun.
Salam
Salam.
A great place for seafood is Hammer's Bay . It is near the roundabout at Queensbay Shopping complex. Great fresh stuff at reasonable prices. Orang melayu masak so tak ada masalah. For nasi , try Kassim Mustafa. There are several branches of Kassim Mustafa. The one near Vistana is the one at sunshine square. For nasi kandar , the best is still the one behind the immigration building in town or Craven A near Komtar. Of course don't forget the laksa Penang or mee gabenor ....... Sedap bangat! I miss Penang already.. Hu hu
Lat, thank you, I was laughing..you r tempting me with all the delicious dan delightul suggestion, however, right now, after vacuuming and moping the bedroom and study room and a glass of lemon green tea, those seemed rather neutral. I will cut and paste it to my hubby's facebook for his reference, in case he wanted to try....we are spending a night in Alor Star..I know hubby will hunt for Jamal popia basah...take care and hope 2012 is not a threat in our malignancy...
Salam,
Foodies will enjoy Penang. Seafood need not be prawns, cuttlefish, mussels, crabs je.. Fish is ok with us, right. And there is plenty of variety to choose from. So what are u waiting for....
Doc, macam reunion pulak grup DBP-USM. Tahniah atas penerbitan buku - i dah beli, sedang baca - appreciate sgt bahagian perbandingan 4 orang pesakit kanser yg bermula dgn peringkat kanser yg lebih kurang sama tetapi berbeza dalam banyak hal. Tahniah sekali lagi!!
Ummu terima kasih atas apresiasi. Sebenarnya saya juga baru khatam (speed reading) untuk kesan kesalahan - ada banyak juga-InsyaAllah editor baiki untuk print selanjutnya.
And that answers Lat suggestion, bila I baca bu
cont: bila saya baca buku saya sekali lagi, saya insaf sekali lagi, dan saya nekad akan mengikuti apa yang saya tulis dengan disiplin...syndrome X semestinya tidak terjadi kalau saya patuh mengikut apa yang saya tulis...saya manusia yang lemah...dalam memerangi kanser, "in moderation" is as good as self sabotaging, I should be strict with the objective of being fit for ibadah..
Ummu, beli di mana buku?
Salam Prof,
My apologies if I seem to be the devil in your quest in overcoming syndrome X. Never was my intention. Agreed that moderation is actually self sabotaging as one thing leads to another. I am currently reading a book written by John R. Lee M.D. ' what your doctor may not tell you about breast cancer. How hormone balance can help save your life'. Interestingly, it is mentioned that obesity is correlated with a higher risk of dying from breast cancer. This could be due to the fact that women who are obese tend to have less healthy lifestyle and also fat cells produce estrogen. Again, warning bells for me.
Have a safe trip .salam
Salam and Happy New Year 2012 Dr Has...
Nice tips and reminder too. Thanks for sharing. :)
can't find the book on Kesihatan Wanita still. Do you have any clue where i can get one in KL area Dr Has?
Lat,
Tak apa, iman I kukuh sebab from 1st Jan, diet restriction to less than 1600 cal a day, ada rational dia, nanti I tulis in next entry....yes the book is right about the fat cell and hormone..dah sampai pun, dah gi makan kat Kayu, ni lepak dalam bilek Vistana, nice room with free internet.
Eliza, yang saya pasti ada buku tu sebelum launching ni ialah di Kedai Buku Ko-op DBP...lepas launching ni mungkin tersebar...nanti I tanya orang DBP esok ya
